Elections in Iraq

A Sustain of the Dark Scenario

By Issam Shukri

Amidst the disastrous situation that the US has created in Iraq, the following should not escape our attention: the dark scenario that the masses of Iraq are currently living its bitter chapters can not be ended with the elections, even if it were most "honest".!!

The reason lies in; 1) the elections is taking place within the circumstances that the US has caused in Iraq through its war and under its full domination; and 2) the reality about elections can only be incarnated through viewing it as a part and parcel of these conditions not a banishment of it. In other words, it should be looked at in the light of the US interest. The US through elections is re-producing the dark scenario and covering it with a "legitimate" blanket. It uses a strong component of any elections, which is the approval of people on the outcome.

The right wing in Worker Communism movement however, speaks of the possibility of these elections but preconditioning it. The logic of this trend is opportunistic. It wants to delude people of the importance of these elections so that it justifies its attempts to participate in it. Moreover, it consciously tries to embellish the dark scenario, in which these elections form a necessary chapter.  This trend is trying to offer advise to the genuine rightist forces in society.  These rightist pro-West forces have the interest in promoting decent and “honest” elections. The opportunism of this trend comes from its representation of another class aspirations.

For us, the bestowal of legitimacy upon this dark scenario and its reactionary forces is totally rejected. We will not accept making the “temporary” circumstance that prevails today “permanent”. Elections which takes place under US auspices is not “ a battlefield for our struggle,...over people’s interests and their intervention in the fate of society” as the leader of that trend claims!!. For us, it is a mechanism for granting credibility to the forces of Dark Scenario through the parliament. In this regard, the more “honest” representative of this trend is the Communist Party of Iraq-CPI and not Worker Communism.!

The endorsement of this approach represents, in the current political givens, putting the obstacles in the face of the real alternative for the people in Iraq i.e. the Socialist Republic. This is the only alternative that could salvage the people from the nightmare of capitalism. This is the alternative that would eradicate capitalism that produces all this bourgeois filth, and barbarically violates the life of millions of human being in Iraq daily.

This hindrance is in contrast to the endeavors of the people of Iraq toward equality, freedom, and prosperity in the widest of forms.

Our approach urges us to expose the aims of the Iraqi and US bourgeoisies for organizing these elections, and uncovers those who give advice to be more fit. As socialists, we must fight dragging the society and the working class in Iraq into a new phase of the Dark Scenario. This task will not be on the elections’ to-do list.

The result of elections, at its best, would be a coalition government of reactionaries, i.e. a dark scenario “legitimate” government. At its worst, would be a flagrant Islamic government. The former will consolidate the role of the whole gloomy forces (Political Islam, nationalists of all shape and colour, and decomposed tribalism) into becoming more positioned in power. This would open the widest doors for them to “legally” loot and suppress the society. The second will establish an Islamic State that would re-open the ba’athist prisons and put up the gallows and apply the “tolerant” teachings of Islam on the most egalitarian peoples.

We consider our urgent task is the mobilization of the deprived masses around our alternative of political power in Iraq - the Socialist Republic. This demand is the embodiment of our declaration to immediately present our alternative to the society, not later. This alternative is the alternative of millions of workers, deprived, women, and youth in Iraq.  The embodiment of that slogan is not possible except through the struggle within the people of Iraq and to organize them around it. This cannot be done through opportunism and flattery of the bourgeoisie.
