The Foundation of the Council of Service Workers in Health Establishments in Nasiriyah, Iraq (CSWHE)

 

 On the 1st day of January 2006 a meeting for 116 representatives for service workers in health establishments in Nasiriyah was held to elect a council which represents the real interests of workers and achieve their aspirations and demand for their rights.

 

At the beginning of the meeting, a speech by the Preparatory Committee of the Council was given by Abdul Hakeem Hasan followed by speeches of the representatives of Shatra, Rifaa’y and suk- elshuookh districts. The representatives were later asked to candidate themselves for the Council’s Leadership Committee. The candidates presented themselves to the attending workers and the elections started openly. The winning candidates are:

 

1.          Abdul Majeed Mohammed – Head of Council

2.          Abdul Hakeem Hasan – Secretary of Council

3.          Qasim Shiaa’ – Administration

4.          Ali Ja’faar Ali – liaison

5.          Salam Hussien Nasir – Finances

6.          Mahdi Mt’athir – Suk-elshuookh Committee

7.          Jasim Mohammed Saywaan - Suk-elshuookh Committee

8.          Hussien Jabbaar Mohsen- Alshatra Committee

9.          Jazi’ Salim Nasir - Alshatra Committee

10.     Hasan Makki Sa’doun – Alriffa’y Committee

11.     Jabbar Mizhir Kadum - Alriffa’y Committee

The elections were followed by a discussion of the council’s agenda. The goals of the council were set forth as follows:

 

1.    The Council will work to form workers’ councils in all governmental institutions and the private sector and to maintain strong relationship with them in order to strengthen the ranks of all workers.

2.    To demand allowances for transmissible diseases and job safety.

3.    To demand allowances for day workers and provide transportation for them to and from work, similar to the conditions set in the ministries of Industry, Transportation, Electricity and Oil.

4.    Allocate a cafeteria or a restaurant to be run by the workers themselves.

5.    Release the vacation allowances that were stopped by the previous regime as well as the new government.

6.    The council has the right to represent workers and solve their problems with administrations and courts and safeguard their rights of sit-ins and strikes, inside or outside of their establishments.
